SUMMARY The geophysical detection of magma bodies and the estimation dimensions, physical properties volume fraction each phase composing is required to improve forecasting volcanic hazards understand transcrustal magmatism. We develop an analytical model calculate P waves velocity in a three-phase consisting crystals gas bubbles suspended viscous melt. apply our speed sound as function temperature three magmas with different chemical compositions, representative diversity that encountered arc employs coupled theory explicitly accounts for exchanges momentum heat between phases. show varies nonlinearly frequency acoustic perturbation two theoretical bounds. dispersion results from exchange melt dispersed phases affects magnitude their thermal expansions. lower bound occurs at low frequencies which all constituents can be considered equilibrium, whereas upper high may neglected. presence produces sharp decrease compressional generates conditions significant usually geophysics. Finally, we compare estimates ones published relationships. Differences are largest higher <10 per cent typical magma.

The Effect of Dynamic Permeability on Velocity and Intrinsic Attenuation of Compressional Waves in Sand

Stress waves contain useful information about the properties of porous materials; they can be recovered through different non-destructive testing methods such as crosswell, vertical seismic profile, borehole logging as well as sonic tests. In all these methods, it is crucial to assess the effects of frequency on wave attributes including velocity and intrinsic attenuation. The dependency of per...

Fast Compressional Alfven Waves in a Tokamak

Enhancement of cyclotron damping is theoretically evaluated based upon the wave E-field polarization which is modified by the two-ion hybrid resonance. The degree of enhancement and its asymmetry about the plasma center is consistent with experimental observations. The enhancement factor is very large at low plasma densities at which most of the past damping strength measurements have been repo...

Dispersive Hydrodynamics: the Mathematics of Dispersive Shock Waves and Applications

Dispersive hydrodynamics is the domain of applied mathematics and physics concerned with fluid motion in which internal friction, e.g., viscosity, is negligible relative to wave dispersion. In conservative media such as superfluids, optical materials, and water waves, nonlinearity has the tendency to engender wavebreaking that is mitigated by dispersion. The mathematical framework for such medi...

Compressional waves guided between parallel fractures

We have performed experiments on the laboratory scale to image seismic wavefronts of compressional waves that are guided between parallel fractures. The wavefronts are detected using water-coupled 1MHz piezoelectric transducers. The stiffness of the fractures is controlled by applying radial stress in a hydraulic stress apparatus that leaves the observation face of the fractured sample open to ...
